Where is scripture deep cries out to deep
Some of the words: "Love never failing to hear my call demands my soul, my life, my all. Post a Comment. January 24, Paul January 26, at PM. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.
Yet, like the man from Psalm 42 , we often find ourselves thirsting for more of Him. Where deep calls to deep. Where pain is exposed rather than covered over. Where healing requires transformation.
Psalm 42 offers sound guidance on how to stay spiritually hydrated during dry or stormy seasons. Here are 5 practical tips gleaned from Psalm 42 —plus New Testament scriptures to support and enrich. Psalm Instruct your soul. As we call out to God from our deep need—He answers back from the depth of His all-sufficient power. Deep calls to Deep. Dear Lord, I'm so thankful that when it feels like no one else understands, You do. You understand about being disappointed in people but You loved them in the midst of that.
Lord, I want to follow Your example. I genuinely care about you as individuals and your theology and your walk with God, not in a condescending way but as your equal. There are a lot of reformed bloggers and theology pundits out there who are only interested in using their theology as a tower to snipe at others.
I have to say a couple of things to this. First of all, thank you so much for the apparent attitude with which you shared this. I feel you clearly communicated that you are not trying to do that. I was wondering about this very same song when we were singing it at a youth conference a number of months ago. I do have one disagreement with you that I hope you will consider.
You said that the primary purpose of worship songs is to teach us truth. No, that is the purpose of the sermon and Bible readings. The primary purpose of our worship songs are to express ourselves to our God. Sometimes that is in praise and adoration, sometimes in surrender, sometimes giving thanks, sometimes crying out for help.
The psalmists will often express what things feel like to him or use hyperbole. I believe there is a place for that in expressing ourselves to God as long as we, in the end, acknowledge reality and come to a place of resting in the truth of God that he has communicated to us through his word. Hopefully this truth is something we are receiving, not only on Sunday morning through the sermon and Scripture readings, but also through daily searching and studying the Word. I hope you will give this some thought.
That you again for writing this interesting and thought provoking blog entry and for seeking the presence of truth in all we do in the church. I will take a song that gets our hearts pounding, our spirit excited, our feet jumping…all scriptural response to our Creator and His Son Jesus.
I genuinely agree with you that many churches are dead in their worship. We absolutely need authentic passionate worship that is grounded in the Word of God.
I have no problem with fast-paced songs with aggressive bass riffs that get people jumping in the air and get their hearts beating. An exciting worship song can be exciting without taking a verse out of its proper context. Why am I picking this fight? Why am I going out of my way to make an issue out of this? Why wont I just live and let live? I have no aspirations to become a big-time critic. I think there are better ways to serve God.
I give you my solemn word that I will do my utmost not to be such an individual. I have to disagree with you. Some songs can be just fun songs to sing, especially when geared toward kids, teens, and young adults.
Of course, the worship portion of the service should not be just fun songs to sing. Other songs will mean different things to different people and sometimes different things at different times in their lives depending on what they are going through.
There is a one song in particular that I cry every time I hear it, but everyone else says it is supposed to be a happy song. I remember one time while we at church singing, and my daughter started crying. Even during corporate worship, we have individual responses to songs. As far as the meaning, it could be a variety of things. Maybe it is that the person is in a deep, dark place crying out to God.
Or maybe they are jumping in following God with both feet and need direction. Why are you jumping in a river?
What well are you stirring up and what are you using? But then again, Amazing Grace can turn people away too. What do you mean I am blind? I am not blind. I am not a wretch. Thank you extenebrasluxx for this post. We sang this in church a few weeks ago, and I could not sing along, because I believe it is important to understand what I am saying and sing it with conviction, or be silent and pray for understanding.
Unfortunately, its been a few weeks, and while I can make a vague sunday school answer, or say I get the gist of it, I can not find a reason why there is so much emphasis on those lyrics. I get what people are saying with not being a critic, but at the same time, the Bible tells us to test the spirits when we feel we are hearing from God. If we are to do that when he is speaking directly to us, then I think its all the more important to do so when its other people relaying what they believe God has spoken to them.
As for the comment from Gloriousjoy, about it being wrong to open the word of God to study and test lyrics against, I think that statement is rubbish. I believe it is our duty to test anything against the scriptures that is being spoken as truth. If it is truth, it will stand. The only reason to avoid testing it is if you are concerned it will not stand up.
Personally I think the critiique is spot-on. Kudos to Bethel Music for a very catchy tune, but lyrically it does feel like they grabbed a concordance and pulled every reference to water they could fit into the song.
Reflecting on God in a way that glorifies Him is great, but once we use His own words we should handle them delicately. Yes, I think your critique is spot on too, and the loving way in which you managed to carry your point across is admirable. It alone never changes and will keep us tried and true; on course.
